The Last Analog Argument
Four machines that refused to separate driver from road.

Before assistance systems mediated between hand and machine, four cars from four countries made the same argument in four different accents. Each still makes it today.
There is a narrow window in the history of the road car, the years after electronic driver aids became possible but before they became mandatory, when a handful of manufacturers still built cars with nothing standing between the driver's own inputs and the machine's response. No anti-lock brakes to soften a locked wheel. No traction control to catch a rear axle under boost. No power steering to filter the road's texture before it reached the driver's hands. Four cars from that window still make the argument better than any that followed: the Ferrari F40, the McLaren F1, the Porsche 911 GT2 of 1995, and the Pagani Zonda F. Four countries, four engines, four different decades within the same window, the same refusal.
None of this is a claim about forced induction. The F40 and the GT2 are both twin-turbocharged, and turbo lag of the period is arguably the least immediate sensation a car can offer, a delay between intention and thrust that the driver simply has to wait out. The argument here is narrower, and in some ways more demanding: whether the car intervenes once the driver has already committed. Electronic systems exist precisely for that moment, the wheel that locks under braking, the rear axle that steps out under power, the low-speed manoeuvre that punishes an unassisted steering rack. These four cars answer that moment with nothing at all. What happens next is entirely, and only, the driver's business.
The Ferrari F40 opened the window in 1987, and it did so as a deliberate statement rather than an accident of engineering conservatism. Enzo Ferrari commissioned it to mark the company's fortieth anniversary, and it became, instead, close to his last public word on what a road-going Ferrari should be once comfort and marketing caution were removed. Ferrari's own test driver, Dario Benuzzi, described the car plainly: no power steering, no power brakes, no electronic devices of any kind. What remained was a tubular chassis, composite bodywork, a twin-turbocharged 2.9 litre V8 producing around 478 PS, and a gated five-speed manual gearbox operated through an exposed metal gate that left no doubt about which gear the driver had actually selected. The F40 does not flatter indifference. It expects the driver to understand boost, weight transfer and consequence, and it offers no correction if that understanding arrives late.
Five years later, Gordon Murray built the car that states the argument most completely of any road car before or since. Murray had spent nearly two decades designing grand prix cars for Brabham and McLaren, and the road car he shaped in 1992 carried that discipline over without compromise. Its 6.1 litre naturally aspirated BMW V12 sent 618 hp through a six-speed manual gearbox and the rear wheels alone, from a carbon-fibre monocoque of a kind no other road car manufacturer had attempted. The F1's own specification states the position without qualification: no power steering, no anti-lock brakes, no traction or stability control of any kind, a deliberate choice even in 1992, when several rivals had already begun fitting driver aids as standard. Murray seated the driver alone at the centre of the cabin, two passengers set back on either side, so that nothing, not even an offset seating position, stood between his own inputs and the car's response. If the F40 opened the argument, the F1 is the sentence it was building toward.
Three years after that, Porsche made the same case from a different direction entirely. The 911 GT2 of 1995 exists because motorsport regulations for the GT2 racing class banned all-wheel drive, and Porsche needed a rear-wheel-drive 911 derived from the all-wheel-drive 993 Turbo to homologate a car for the category. Porsche's engineers removed the driven front axle, stripped roughly 205 kilograms from the Turbo's kerb weight, and kept the 3.6 litre air-cooled twin-turbo flat six, its output raised to 430 PS. The all-wheel-drive Turbo had made its speed democratic, forgiving a driver who mistimed the throttle. The GT2 handed that responsibility back. It remains the only air-cooled 911 to wear the GT2 name, and its reputation, earned rather than manufactured, is that of a car built by engineers who understood exactly what they were removing and did it anyway.
By the time the Pagani Zonda F arrived in 2005, much of the supercar world had already begun its migration toward automated and semi-automated gearboxes. The Zonda F, the car that marked the point Horacio Pagani's young company matured from an audacious outsider into one of the defining names of the hypercar era, kept a genuine six-speed manual gearbox, driving a naturally aspirated 7.3 litre Mercedes-AMG V12 through the rear wheels alone. Named for Juan Manuel Fangio, Pagani's friend and mentor, the Zonda F paired that mechanical honesty with real chassis sophistication: a carbon-fibre monocoque, double wishbone suspension at all four corners, and a 46/54 front-to-rear weight distribution tuned for balance rather than straight-line theatre alone. It is proof that the argument for an unmediated car and the argument for a genuinely sophisticated one were never in conflict.
Read in order, the four cars trace less a bloodline than four separate answers arriving at the same conclusion across less than two decades: Maranello in 1987, Woking in 1992, Zuffenhausen in 1995, San Cesario sul Panaro in 2005. None of the four was built in response to the others. Each manufacturer reached the same position independently: that the most honest thing a very fast car can do is refuse to protect its driver from a mistake.
That window did not stay open. Electronic stability control, first optional and later required in most markets, arrived not as a betrayal of performance but as a genuine advance in safety, and the industry's move toward it began earlier than any of these four cars, in systems some manufacturers were already developing while Murray was still drawing the F1's monocoque.
