The Ferrari 288 GTO is a rear-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive homologation special built around a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8, the car that opens Ferrari's modern halo lineage.
Unveiled at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show, the 288 GTO borrowed its name directly from the legendary 1962 250 GTO: Gran Turismo Omologata, "grand touring, homologated," while its own numeric name encodes its specification, 2.8 litres (the era's rounded shorthand for its real 2,855cc displacement) and 8 cylinders. It was Ferrari's first turbocharged road car and, when it launched, the fastest production car in the world.
